Florence Pugh Never Went to Drama School — She Sent in an Audition Tape at 17 and Got Cast , The Rest Is Film History

Florence Pugh claims that her instructors at St. Edward’s institution in Oxford, a sizable, prestigious independent institution that has produced scientists, legislators, and the rare literary personality, did not support her decision to pursue a career in movies. Acting was viewed as a diversion, a pastime that had no place in the serious world of UCAS applications and A-levels. She has talked about feeling disregarded.

However, she was doing both at the same time, taking exams in Oxford and starring with Maisie Williams in a professionally produced British drama in 2014 during the overlap between her last years of sixth form and the filming schedule of Carol Morley’s The Falling. She was seventeen years old. On her mother’s advice, she had casually sent in an audition tape with little expectation of success. She was chosen. She was nominated for Best British Newcomer by BIFA for The Falling. As these things sometimes happen, her professors’ suspicion was just incorrect.

Florence Pugh’s scholastic background is significant since it stands in stark contrast to the typical British acting career route. The majority of significant stage and film talent in the UK is produced by RADA, LAMDA, Guildhall, and the Central School of Speech and Drama. These institutions offer rigorous, methodologically demanding training that is strongly ingrained in the industry’s perception of what constitutes a legitimate art. Pugh didn’t go to any of them.

After completing her education at two Oxford private schools, Wychwood School and St. Edward’s, she went straight from A-levels to professional film employment. There was no three-year drama degree, no conservatory year, and no foundational phase of workshop performances and technical training. Her technical development took place in front of cameras on real movie sets as she played real characters for paying distributors. It’s a quicker, less supervised learning process that calls for a new kind of flexibility—the capacity to learn what you need on the spot rather than ahead of time.

A layer that is sometimes summarized too hastily is added by the childhood context. Pugh’s early years were spent in and out of hospitals due to tracheomalacia, a disorder that causes the windpipe to be excessively soft and prone to collapsing. At the age of three, Pugh’s family left Oxford completely and moved to Andalusia in southern Spain. In the hopes that the warmer weather might clear her airways, they stayed for a number of years. Gradually, it did. Pugh was about six years old when the family returned to England.

She had lived her most formative early years in a family that had relocated due to a medical condition, living between cultures, and in a climate different from her parents’. She told British Vogue that the disease is directly responsible for her unique deep voice, saying, “It’s the reason I have a deep voice.” One of the most instantly identifiable aspects of her presence on film was the medical issue that plagued her early years. This type of biographical arc is difficult to summarize.

It’s easy to underestimate the ways in which acting and musical self-education coexist. Pugh posted cover songs to YouTube under the name Flossie Rose between 2013 and 2016 while she was still in school and starting to film. She had an acoustic guitar, was self-taught, and had a voice that was significantly more developed than the typical teenage bedroom recording.

She didn’t make a big deal out of it. It wasn’t a job shift, but a true creative outlet. Later, in 2021, she and her brother Toby Sebastian worked together on a single. She consistently approaches skill development through direct practice rather than a set curriculum, freely, and without institutional mediation. The acting follows the same pattern.

It’s difficult to ignore the fact that the lack of formal training has had the exact opposite effect of what is typically expected when looking at the filmography that came after the A-levels and The Falling: Lady Macbeth, Little Women, Midsommar, Oppenheimer, Dune: Part Two, Thunderbolts*, and an upcoming role in an East of Eden adaptation.

The argument in favor of drama school is that it develops range, keeps habits from becoming rigid, and provides performers with a technical vocabulary for purposefully making tough decisions. Pugh has reportedly developed all of those skills on sets and in jobs without it thanks to the unique training that comes from having to perform in front of a camera and a director. Formal training might have filled in some of the gaps. Another possibility is that the work itself serves as evidence to refute that claim.
