Troy, Alabama, a small community of about 19,000 inhabitants, is located in Pike County, about 50 miles southeast of Montgomery along US Highway 231. The town and the university are so closely entwined that it is hard to distinguish between them.

Troy University has a physical presence that is out of proportion to the population of the surrounding city thanks to its main campus, which is located along University Avenue and consists of a number of buildings, sports facilities, and open spaces. Founded in 1887 to train teachers in rural Alabama, the institution has been many different things to many different locales.

It is important to comprehend the foundation setting because it influenced Troy’s development. State governments all over the nation were starting “normal schools” in the late 19th century. These establishments were created expressly to generate competent teachers for the public school system, which was growing quickly and required a large number of teachers.

During this time, about 180 such institutions were established, including Alabama’s State Normal School in Troy. By the early 20th century, the majority of those institutions had evolved from single-purpose teacher training programs to state colleges, and by the late 20th century, they had become universities. Troy took just that course and finally developed into something far more sophisticated than its original goals indicated.

The magnitude of what transpired following the 2005 merger of Troy State University, Montgomery, Phenix City, Dothan, and the main campus under a single accreditation to become Troy University sets Troy apart from many other regional Alabama universities. One system was created from four campuses in Alabama.

However, by that time, the institution’s influence had already spread well beyond the county; it currently operates in 11 countries and maintains 60 teaching locations throughout 17 U.S. states, serving students who will never visit the Pike County campus. There are more than 100,000 alumni in all 50 states as well as abroad. A Troy degree may be found in locations that have nothing to do with rural Alabama.

Troy is attempting to serve a wide range of people, including working adults, military members, and students who might not have other viable options for higher education in their area. The university’s 96% admission rate demonstrates a true open-access objective rather than a deficiency in standards.

    Wiki

Its $9,792 in-state tuition makes it one of Alabama’s more reasonably priced four-year options. This accessibility is extended to areas of the state that are geographically remote from the main campus by the branch campuses in Montgomery, Dothan, and Phenix City.

The baseball team comes next. The community of Troy, Alabama, was not pleased when the Troy Trojans earned the program’s first-ever trip to the College World Series in Omaha in June 2026. There’s a feeling that the baseball team’s run to Omaha accomplished something that enrollment figures and alumni statistics never quite manage: it made people wonder where Troy University is.

Troy University has been doing consistent, serious educational work for almost 140 years in a location that most people couldn’t find on a map without looking it up. It turns out that the answer lies somewhere much bigger than Pike County.
