2026 College Baseball Super Regionals , Troy’s Historic First Trip to Omaha and Eight Stories That Defined the Weekend

On Saturday afternoon in Troy, Alabama, a team that had been chosen as one of the final programs to make it into the NCAA Tournament’s field of 64 earned a spot in the College World Series in Omaha, something no Troy baseball club had ever done before. With a 7-2 victory over Little Rock, the Trojans punched a ticket that the program had been working toward for years but had not yet achieved.

Although Troy isn’t a household name in college baseball, it was the kind of moment that doesn’t make a big impression on the national discourse. However, for those who follow the program, it was the moment that altered how a season is remembered. And it was one of eight tales that shaped a Super Regionals weekend that, when combined, created precisely the kind of mayhem the format was intended to induce.

For a while, the Georgia-Mississippi State series in Athens will be rerun. The two games at Foley Field were complete slugfests, reminding everyone watching why the super regional round of college baseball is one of the most interesting formats in all of American sports. In a game that saw several lead changes, Georgia won Game 1 by a single run, 13–12. Georgia survived once more in Game 2, which stretched to 10 innings with a final score of 11-9.

The two games saw a total of 45 runs and 21 home runs between the two sides, which is the highest total in a super regional series since BBCOR bats were introduced in 2011. When Daniel Jackson of UGA hit the game-winning home run in the eleventh inning, Foley Field was filled with commotion that could be heard far beyond the stadium.

Alabama’s journey to Omaha was not without its challenges. The Crimson Tide have not advanced to the College World Series since 1999, a 27-year gap that, considering the program’s resources, is nearly inexplicable by Alabama and SEC standards in general.

That skid was broken by defeating St. John’s 8-0 and 7-2 in the Tuscaloosa Super Regional, thanks to Tyler Fay’s excellent pitching in Game 1. Getting there ultimately addresses the question that has been posed every season for almost thirty years. Whether Alabama’s roster translates into a true Omaha contender is a different matter.

With a total score of 29-3, West Virginia, ranked 16th in the country and hosting Cal Poly, had the most dominant performance of any team in the super regional round. Auburn was defeated in straight games by Ole Miss, which Coach Mike Bianco equipped with one of the oldest and most seasoned rosters in NCAA baseball.

In front of a crowd that had experienced the whole gamut of emotions over the course of three days, North Carolina won the pivotal game 4-3 at Boshamer Stadium after needing all three games to defeat USC. Texas won Game 2 6-5 after shutting off Oregon with consecutive home runs from leadoff.

Troy and West Virginia, two College World Series newcomers, are among the returning powers in the field that will travel to Omaha on June 12. Given this specific field, it is likely that the 2026 MCWS will be less predictable than normal.

First-timers typically don’t feel the pressure to do well. Furthermore, Troy has already shown that it doesn’t require anyone to take it seriously, despite the fact that nobody did so at the beginning of the competition. On their own, the victories have been handling that task quite well.
